Forum: GratefulDead Subject: the dead played a lot, but THIS GUY is dedicated (non-dead)

ok so I heard this story on NPR today and had to share:

The first chair lead clarinetist for the New York Philharmonic has held that 1st chair spot for 60 years! He is now retiring (at 80), and never lost the spot to anyone else. Musicians audition for spots like that CONSTANTLY, and a musician holding a lead spot in an internationally elite orchestra for 10 year is quite a feat- but 60!

He performed over 10,200 concerts with the philharmonic over 60 years. (that would be 5,100 in 30 years whereas the dead did 3,000ish in 30 years), and it is estimated that around 41,000,000 (forty-one million) people saw him perform live.

In the piece there was an interview with him and he sounded like he was 40-50. It's crazy that an 80 year old could not only compete with, but BEAT the younger clarinet virtouosos that wanted his spot for over half a century.

Some people got it...

That is a great story and a pretty incredible accomplisment. I'm not particularly knowledgeable about that type of music (or any music as far as playing goes), but I wouldn't think that aging would do much to diminish a person's vituosity. If you "got it", you "got it" for life. Look at BB King....still tearing it up at damn near 90 years of age!!!

Anyway...congratulations to this guy...To do something for that long, you really have to love what you are doing...Kudos to him for being able to spend his lifetime in a vocation that he truly loves...not many of us that can say that...I sure can't!
